About HowToPayOff.com

HowToPayOff.com exists to help people answer one question clearly: "How and when can I be debt-free?" We build free, private tools and plain-English guides that turn a stressful pile of balances into a step-by-step plan.

Our Mission

Most debt advice online is either too vague to act on or is quietly steering you toward a loan or service. We wanted something different: a calculator that shows the honest math for your own debts, paired with guides that explain the trade-offs without a sales pitch. You don't need an account, and you don't need to hand over personal details to use anything on this site.

How Our Calculator Works

Our debt payoff calculator simulates your plan one month at a time, the same way your lenders calculate your balance:

  1. Each month, interest is added to every balance using its annual rate divided by 12.
  2. The minimum payment is applied to every debt.
  3. Your extra payment goes to the target debt, chosen by the method you select: highest rate first (avalanche) or smallest balance first (snowball).
  4. When a debt reaches zero, its payment rolls over to the next target, so your total monthly payment stays the same.
  5. The simulation repeats until every balance is paid, giving you a debt-free date and total interest.

Results are estimates. Real-world balances can differ because of daily interest calculations, fees, rate changes, or new charges. Your numbers stay in your browser and are never sent to us.

Our Editorial Standards

  • We show our math. Every worked example on this site is calculated with the same method as our calculator, with the assumptions stated next to it.
  • We explain trade-offs. There is rarely one right answer in personal finance. We describe who each strategy suits and who it doesn't.
  • We point to official sources. For topics like credit reports, federal student loans, and credit counseling, we direct you to official or nonprofit resources.
  • We keep content current. Each guide shows the date it was last updated, and we revisit articles when rules or typical rates change.
  • We correct mistakes. If you spot an error, email help@howtopayoff.com and we'll review and fix it.
